    FAQs

Becoming a surrogate mother is a deeply meaningful decision—one that transforms your life and helps create a family for someone else. At NW Surrogacy Center, we’re honored to guide you through every step of the journey. Here’s what that process looks like:

    • Initial Application: You will fill out our quick surrogate interest form online. It’s the only step you’ll take alone!
    • Screening: We will call you and set up a Zoom appointment to answer all of your questions and explain the process. Our surrogate screening includes a background check, pregnancy record review, and psychological evaluation. We want to make sure you are ready for the journey ahead!
    • Matching: We will match you with the intended parents of your choice. All NWSC families have passed a background check and have a medical need for surrogacy. They can’t have a family without your help.
    • Legal Counsel: We will give you an attorney licensed in Oregon who understands our specific laws. They will walk you through all the contracts, ensuring your rights and compensation are fully protected and that the parents are the legal guardians at birth.
Medical Prep and Embryo Transfer: You’ll take IVF medications to prepare for the embryo transfer at an IVF clinic in the U.S. You will travel to the clinic twice and NWSC will make all the arrangements
    • Pregnancy: You’ll have high-quality medical care, emotional support, a powerful surrogate community, and compensation throughout the pregnancy. We will match you with a family who shares similar values so that you can develop a positive relationship. Many families and surrogates become lifelong friends.
    • Delivery: You can choose a doula for the delivery, and the parents will also attend the birth along with your support person. The intended family can’t wait to meet their baby! The baby will go home with their new parents, and you’ll recover with our continued support.

At NW Surrogacy Center, we match surrogates with intended parents who share similar values, goals, and communication styles to help build a strong, trusting team. The decision to move forward is mutual—both you and the intended parents decide if it’s the right match, fostering a relationship built on compassion, trust, and mutual understanding. This process begins when you fill out a detailed questionnaire and complete a personal interview so we know what you’re looking for in a match.

Next, we review the profiles of our intended parents, seeking a family that aligns with your goals and values. Once we find a suitable match, we share their profile with you and yours with them. When both sides agree, we arrange a meeting, which is most often over video call. This call is officially labeled a “match meeting” and gives both sides the opportunity to ask questions and learn about one another. If all parties wish to move forward, we confirm the match, marking an important and exciting milestone in your surrogacy journey.

Becoming a surrogate mother takes a lot of courage and generosity and we are here to provide support at every step of the process.

There are several steps to becoming a surrogate mother, and every journey is unique. However, on average, the process from beginning to childbirth typically takes 17 to 24 months.

It can take several weeks to a few months to complete your application, including the Zoom interview, background check, pregnancy record review, and psychological evaluation. The matching process to pair you with intended parents who share your values can take several weeks more. From intake to matching, this process takes on average 4-6 months.

Once your match is confirmed, you’ll take self-administered IVF medications for 3 to 4 weeks in preparation for the embryo transfer. About 9 days after the embryo transfer, you’ll have a blood test to check to see if the transfer was successful. If the result is positive, you’ll have a follow-up appointment a few days later to confirm that your hormone levels are rising appropriately. About a month after the transfer, an ultrasound will confirm the fetal heartbeat and that a healthy baby is growing!

After childbirth, NW Surrogacy Center continues to offer support and resources for finding counseling to help you recover and transition with care. We will check in with you regularly to see if you need any additional support during the fourth trimester. We understand it takes time to heal from the delivery, and this unique pregnancy can bring up unexpected emotions. We are here for you.

Women choose to become surrogate mothers for many meaningful reasons. Some are inspired by the opportunity to help others achieve their dreams of parenthood. For example, some surrogates see helping LGBTQ+ individuals and couples as a form of social justice activism. Others have loved being pregnant and want to experience it again, even though their own families are complete. Many are also drawn to the chance to support their household financially while remaining close to home. Most surrogates describe surrogacy as an opportunity to do something really big with their lives outside of motherhood.

Whatever the motivation, becoming a surrogate mother is a deeply personal act of generosity, strength, and compassion, often shaped by a unique blend of these reasons.
